Dangers of Eating Disorders in Teens & Adolescents

Eating disorders like anorexia, bulimia and binge eating disorder are potentially life-threatening issues. From the direct physical impact of starvation, purging and bingeing to the depression onset by the disorders, the effects of eating disorders are extremely dangerous. This list of the potential dangers of eating disorders lists only a few of the more serious effects of eating disorders.

Dangers of Anorexia Nervosa

Heart disease:  Malnutrition slows heart rate and lowers blood pressure, putting a person at risk for a heart attack.
Osteoporosis:  Calcium deficiency causes bones to lose density and can cause painful fractures.
Muscle loss:  Protein deficiency reduces muscle mass, making simply physical activity difficult.


Dangers of Bulimia Nervosa

Dehydration:  Electrolyte levels fluctuate rapidly during bingeing and purging, which could lead to heart and kidney failure caused by a loss of potassium, sodium and chloride.
Gastric rupture:  Rapid eating during a binge-eating episode could tear away stomach fibers.
Esophagus rupture:  Weakened by stomach acids from purging, the esophagus becomes inflamed and could rupture from frequent vomiting.
Tooth decay:  Stomach acids stain and decay enamel.
Irregular bowel movements:  Constipation from laxative abuse could become chronic.
Ulcers:  Irregular diet and purging can cause peptic ulcers and pancreatitis.
